.."African Queen" solo section of Santana's version of Black Magic Woman?

Is it a standard Cha Cha Cha ... when did a cha cha have a solo section...maybe it could be described as a Tumbao section more like a Salsa with the bass playing the tumbao ... I cant figure out what the rhythm in this section...I know Black M Woman is a Cha Cha and I understand how to direct this but African Queen seems to be an additional solo section...maybe they just jump to a salsa rhythm ...if so what clave is it? 2/3 or 3/2...how do I explain this to a group of Latin retarded musicians...."African Queen" starts with an ostinato bass part...I guess this is the replacement for a standard piano tumbao? So its a salsa rythm? ...what is the generic cascara pattern for the timbale for this solo section when the conga takes a solos?...

The drumset player is filling up the rhythm with tresillo on the kick pedal. He mostly just hits the first two hits of tresillo, then later is doing all three.
The congas are just the basic tumbao, which we call Mambo around here.
Not sure about the Timbale, but I think it's basic cascara.

Good luck teaching non-Latin guys to keep a Latin groove!! That's years of learning,, not minutes!

thanks for your input dave...if I can just get one kid to play a cascara without out looking at me like...."are you kidding me"? ....then I can hop on the conga and begin to make something happen....they just don't get the idea of music structured by percussion instrument patterns....its an alien concept that has to be forced down there frickin throats before they learn to love it.

My main conga instructor has said for years that Latin percussion is the pinnacle of percussion. It's the one you approach "after" you've explored all the other aspects of percussion.

        Yes,, but......

I had every one of my classes, a few weeks ago, doing a step-slap-slap, step-slap-slap, 6/8 pattern. A kid doing the Christmas Bells are Ringing rhythm on the Cata, another on the shaker doing tap, dong-dong, tap, dong-dong, 6/8 pattern. I played the congas over it and sang, and they held it!!!!!
If you can do that as an immediate with no real build up, then you can probably get them to do anything in a year's time.

Again, good luck,, but stay positive!!! the attitude matters so much!
