I know it's really early to be thinking of it,, but,,,
I vowed a few years ago to never miss one of these. So, being the hugest crazy proponent of the annual Humboldt Afro-Cuban Song, Dance, and Drum workshop, thought I'd stir up interest for this year's gathering of fabulous folks on the path of the best music the world has ever known.
Who's down for this year!!!!?????
Save up your buckazoids and make it happen!!!
It'll cost you about $5-600 all expenses for a week up close and personal with some of the best musicians in the world..

Dave

Re: Humboldt 2007!!! Who's going!?!?!?
Fri, November 17, 2006 - 6:41 AMYeah, it's over a thousand mile trip for me! Each year I try to rouse a bit of interest in my rumba buddies around here,, but it's just too much of a monetary and time commitment for them... I completely understand.. Not everyone can do it, but it has been such an invaluable learning experience for me I just want to spread it.
A few from this list have gone!
Anybody want to speak up!?!?
There are those who say, "why don't you just go to Cuba?" Well, I'd have to say that this is condensed Afro-Cuban music for an entire week. And it's probably half the price it'd cost you to go abroad and study. I would never say it's better, or can take the place of an actual trip to Cuba, but a chance to play with Francisco Aguebella, Jesus Perez, Johnny Santos, Rey Gonzalez, Sandy Perez!?!? Jeeze! It just doesn't get much better than that!!! -

Thu, March 8, 2007 - 7:50 PMThis comes from a posting on LatinPercussion Yahoo mail list as posted by David Penelosa:
Howard Kaufman and Humboldt State University's Office of Extended
Education presents the 11th annual Explorations in Afro-Cuban Dance &
Drum workshops, July 21 - July 28, 2007, celebrating the folkloric music,
songs, and dances of the Afro-Cuban people. Set in Arcata, amongst the
towering redwoods and breathtaking coastline of Northern California, this
workshop promises to be an extraordinary assembly of Afro-Cuban
percussion and dance masters! This years' instructors include Francisco
Aguabella, Ramon "Sandy" Pérez, Jesus Diaz, Rogelio "Noño" Kindelan,
John Santos, Michael Spiro, Reynaldo Gonzalez Fernandez, Susana Arenas
Pedroso, Silfredo La O, Sonyalci Feldman, Mark Lamson, David Peñalosa,
Chris Walker, Charlie Chavez, Colin Douglas and more.
Havana, Matanzas and Haitiano styles of Afro-Cuban dance and drum
techniques will be represented. The drum classes will encourage students to
go beyond just learning parts, with special classes offered in Batá, shekere,
quinto, technique, and basic rhythmic skills. The dance classes will be
accompanied with live drumming. At all skill levels, the dance classes are
certain to be rigorous and challenging. In addition, Afro-Cuban song
instruction will be offered. Classes are progressive and cumulative. Thus,
participants are encouraged to attend the entire program.
For one price, students will enjoy admission to any classes and events,
including the faculty/student performance on the final evening. Special
evening events will round out the program. Highlights include a beach party,
rumba and salsa parties, and the student recital/faculty performance. The
daily schedule is arranged to maximize exposure to the three components of
Afro-Cuban folklore: singing, dancing and drumming.Whether you're new to
the program or returning, you will have a rich cultural and educational
experience in the annual Explorations in Afro-Cuban Dance & Drum
workshop at Humboldt State University.

Re: Humboldt 2007!!! Who's going!?!?!?
Tue, June 26, 2007 - 4:55 PMHey Guys, I'm cross-posting this from an e-mail on LatinPerc yahoo list.
Dave
>Hello Afro-Cuban Enthusiasts,
The Explorations in Afro-Cuban Dance and Drum Workshops, July 21 – 28,
2007 at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California is still accepting
registrations. This year promises to be one of the best yet. Students from
Bolivia, New York, New Jersey, British Columbia, Ohio, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Texas, Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona, Maryland,
Washington, Oregon, and California will all be coming together to study with
our internationally recognized faculty. Now in our 11th year, we are proud of
the reputation we have both in the United States, and in Cuba, as the most
comprehensive Afro-Cuban dance and drum program in the U.S. We offer 3
levels of dance and 5 levels of drum classes as well as daily song classes,
focusing on the folkloric repertoire of the Yoruba, Bantú, Arara, Carabali, and
Haitiano styles of music and dance. Some highlights of our workshop are 1)
having master drum and dance teachers from the 3 main centers of Cuba:
Havana, Matanzas, and Santiago. We have 3 strands of dance classes, one
entirely dedicated to the styles from Santiago, lead by dancer Silfredo La O
and drummer Rogelio Kindelan from folkloric group Ban Rra Rra, one entirely
dedicated to the Matanzas repertoire lead by dancer Reynaldo Gonzalez and
drummer Sandy Pérez, from Grupo Afro-Cuba de Matanzas, with Sonyalsi
Feldman from Matanzas singing, and one entirely dedicated to Havana styles
lead by dancer Susana Arenas (originally in Raices Profunda, but has
danced with many groups as well as her own), and legendary drummer
Francisco Aguabella, who started his career in the U.S. accompanying dance,
something he only does now at our workshop, and who Susana Arenas says
is fantastic at following her on the dance floor; 2) Our U.S. drum teachers offer
their unique perspective of learning as a foreigner. They were once like us,
trying to unlock the code to the beautiful drum systems of Cuba. They balance
the rote approach of our Cuban drum faculty. 3) Our evening rumba/salsa
parties, where faculty and students come together and inspire each other.
This is just a part of what for most is an unforgettable experience in one of the
most beautiful settings on the planet. Please check out our website http:// www.humboldt.edu/afrocuban for more information.
Thank you,
Howie Kaufman
